The largest portion of the collection consists of 22 letters from McClellan to Edward Henry Wright and covers the period from 1863 to 1885. Other correspondents include J. E. Peyton, David Hunter, John Van Buren, William H. Aspinwall, Robert Patterson, and others. Also included are a few letters by McClellan's wife Ellen Mary Marcy McClellan.
