Two 16-page drawing books by William N. Bartholomew, published by Potter, Ainsworth & Company, New York and Chicago. The books contain unnumbered exercises which range from one to three per page and focus on outline drawing. Some of the exercises include: drinking goblets, a call bell, a candlestick holder and floral and leafy designs and patterns. All of the exercises have been completed by a previous owner.

Bartholomew's National System of Industrial Drawing, Mechanical, New Editions, No. 14 and No. 15
Visual Materials
Two 16-page drawing books by William N. Bartholomew, published by American Book Company, New York, Cincinnati and Chicago. The books contain numbered problems and exercises, chiefly focused on angles and lines for developing precision and accuracy. A sampling of some of the exercises covered are: the quatrefoil, division of lines into equal and proportional parts, construction of ornamental forms- design (all from book 14) and tangent lines and circles, circles inscribed and circumscribed, drawing of joints between stones in the elliptical arch and construction of plans for a building. Each of the problems and exercises are comprised of primarily instructional text with a small image for copying or use as a guide, and ample space in which to work.

Bartholomew's National System of Industrial Drawing, Linear Perspective, New Edition, No. 18

One drawing book entitled Bartholomew's National System of Industrial Drawing, Linear Perspective, New Edition, No. 18, by William N. Bartholomew, published by American Book Company, New York, Cincinnati and Chicago, ca. 1883. This 32-page book contains 133 lithograph illustrations. The first 4 pages include general remarks and directions for drawing perpendicular and parallel lines; the remaining pages contain numbered problems and unnumbered exercises. Each of the problems and exercises are comprised of instructional text, illustrations, and space for drawing. The majority of the exercises require the study and creation of parallel and perpendicular lines in relation to perspective using two and three-dimensional objects and designs. None of the exercises have been completed. The front cover is framed by a simple but decorative border that surrounds the title. An Egyptian aten is below the edition statement, and the publisher's statement is below that. The number of the book is in both the left and right-hand corners of the frame. The insides of the front and back covers are blank. On the back cover is a publisher's advertisement for "Popular Educational Series" of schoolbooks. Bartholomew's National System of Industrial Drawing, Sketching from Objects, New Edition, No. 16

One drawing book entitled Bartholomew's National System of Industrial Drawing, Sketching from Objects, New Edition, No. 16, by William N. Bartholomew, published by Potter, Ainsworth & Co., Boston, New York and Chicago, 1883. The subtitle (listed on page 1) of this 20-page book is "Principles of Linear Perspective". Within the book are 46 lithograph illustrations, usually more than one per exercise. Each unnumbered exercise is comprised of textual instructions, one or more images and space for drawing. Text on the first page explains the purpose of this book: "... to furnish a short course of instruction in the drawing of outlines of objects as they appear to the eye when seen from one point." The first part of the book is devoted to explanation of principles and rules relating to linear perspective; the remainder is a series of exercises which progress in difficulty. Some of the exercises include: boxes and cubes, a house, a chair, a bucket, and a scene of a house on the side of a road. The final two pages are a continuation of the notes and principles found at the beginning of the book. The front cover is decorated with a simple but decorative frame surrounding the title and edition, and an Egyptian aten design appears below the edition statement, and the publisher's statement is below that The book number is in the upper left and right-hand corners of the front cover. The insides of the front and back covers are blank. On the back cover are several publisher's advertisements for various school book series; the headline at the top of the page reads "Popular Educational Series". Bartholomew, published by Potter, Ainsworth & Co., Boston, New York and Chicago, 1884. This 20-page book is illustrated with 39 lithograph illustrations. The first 2 pages contain an outline of this book and various rules that apply to drawing with light, shade and shadow. On the last page are several notes and tips pertaining to lights, shade, and shadow. The pages in between are devoted to the actual drawing exercises. Some of these include: a treescape, a bucket, ornamental designs in relief, floral designs, and various outdoor scenes. Each exercise, one per page, is comprised of textual instruction, an image or images, and ample space for drawing. None of the exercises have been completed.
