    Notes on the history of electrical science: typescript of book

    Copy of 51-page typescript of book written by Lyle D. Feisel and two pages of correspondence between Feisel and Bern Dibner. The typescript concerns the history of electrical science and includes chapters on the work of scientists including William Gilbert, Otto von Guericke, Benjamin Franklin, Charles Augustin Coulomb, Luigi Galvani, Alessandro Volta, Hans Christian Oersted, André-Marie Ampère, Georg Ohm, Michael Faraday, Carl Friedrich Gauss, Wilhelm Weber, and James Clerk Maxwell. In a letter written by Feisel to Dibner enclosing the typescript and dated 1972, February 28, Feisel mentions earlier correspondence between the two and describes the Notes, thanking Dibner for his interest in the history of electrical science. In a letter written in response dated 1972, March 7, Dibner mentions a list of publications on the history of electricity and magnetism and invites Feisel to join the Society for the History of Technology.

    This collection contains approximately 450 articles, offprints, pamphlets and other works, covering a span of 1812 to 1894, collected by the British explorer Sir Richard Francis Burton and forming part of his library. The items are contained in 430 envelopes and cover 17 different categories of material: General; Periodicals, Congress Reports; Anthropology, Archaeology, Folklore; Biography; Geography, Travel; Linguistics; Literature; Medicine, Psychology; Religion, Philosophy; Science, Pure, Natural, Applied; Sword; Africa; Americas; Asia; Europe; Pacific, Australasia. Some of the works include manuscript annotations by Burton as well as correspondence sent to him and insertions of articles and clippings. This is a subsection of the Sir Richard Francis Burton Library Printed Material Collection in the Rare Books Department.     Society for the History of Medical Science

    This collection contains approximately 870 publications and printed items, produced by various organizations, related to hospitals, medicine, medical education, and public health, chiefly in Southern California in the 20th century. The materials were compiled as part of the library of the Los Angeles County Medical Association Collection, a professional institution designed to regulate and encourage the development of the medicine in Los Angeles. The bulk of the collection consists of programs for meetings, conventions, and congresses; annual reports for medical societies, hospitals, and medical schools; and doctor, staff, and medical student directories. In addition, there are reprints of speeches and addresses; yearbooks for medical schools; commemorative, biographical, and historical publications; some original historical documents; by-laws and founding documents; and some planning and administrative documents. The materials include items produced by nearly 200 different authors, though many organizations are represented by only a few items. There are over 140 items published by or about the Los Angeles County Medical Association. The collection also contains seven boxes of catalog cards created by the Los Angeles County Medical Association describing the materials in the collection.
