Marsilio Landriani letters to Jean-André de Luc

Nine letters written by Marsilio Landriani to Swiss meteorologist, physicist, and geologist Jean-André de Luc (1727-1817), addressed as "Monsieur" and "Mon cher Monsieur" in their salutations. The letters, which are in French, relate to Landrianis work as a physicist, and address topics including electricity, meteorology, hygrometry, and various experiments. Those dated 1783, 1786, and 1787 were written from Milan, Italy, and those dated 1788 were written from London, England (two letters), or from an unspecified location (one letter). Six letters bear red wax seals, and two show traces of seals that were removed. Three letters include the name Landriani or M. Landriani handwritten in red ink at the top.

Appareil à Gaz: manuscript, letter, diagram, and note

One five-page manuscript entitled Appareil à Gaz describing an illuminating gas plant, plus one diagram of the gas works and a letter (two pages), written by Lankez? to Monsieur Banuel? from Metz, France, and dated 1819. The manuscript includes emendations and marginalia, and the diagram covers both pages of a 30 x 43 cm folded sheet that contains calculations and a brief annotation on verso. Also includes one sealed note with text, "appareil pour la production du gaz à éclairage, No. 11."

Jean Frédéric Ostervald letters

Five letters written by Jean Frédéric Ostervald and one manuscript by an unidentified writer. Two of the five letters are addressed to Monsieur [Jean] Clogenson (1785-1876), a librarian in Alençon, and one letter, dated 1825, is addressed to Professor [Marc-August] Pictet (1752-1825), an influential editor and researcher who was a professor of natural philosophy at the Academy of Geneva. The recipients of the other two letters are unidentified. The letters are in French; one was written from Paris, France, while the origin of the others is unspecified. The four-page manuscript, also written in French, possibly by Ostervald, describes routes and travel times between numerous destinations, mostly within Switzerland.

Two letters written by George Biddell Airy. One four-page letter, dated 1852, June 10, is a response to a letter from Archdeacon [Hare?]. A two-page letter, dated 1858, December 7 and addressed to William Moody, regards an article that Airy wrote in 1854 concerning university reform.

The letter from Antoine-François de Foureroy and Gaspard Monge to the Minister of the Marine regards Citoyen [Jean-François?] Clouet. The letter is dated 1 Ventôse, l'an 9 de la République française [1801 June 1], and is written in French from Paris. One page is torn.

"Essai d'anatomie, en tableaux imprimés, qui representent au naturel tous les muscles de la face, du col, de la tête, de la langue & du larinx, d'après les parties disséquées & préparées, par Monsieur Duverney ... comprenant huit grandes planches dessinées, peintes, gravées & imprimées en couleur & grandeur naturelles, par le Sieur Gautier ... " has a separate title page dated 1745. "Suite de l'essai d'anatomie, en tableaux imprimes, representent au naturel tous les muscles du pharinx, du tronc & des extrémités suprérieures & inférieures, d'après les parties disséquées & préparées, par Monsieur Duverney ..." has a caption title and a colophon which reads: De l'Imprimerie de Quillau, rue Galande, à l'Annonciation, 1748. According to Choulant, etc., the two parts of the 'Myologie' were first issued separately in 1745 but Gautier's note at the end of "Anatomie générale des viscères" states that the "Essai" did not appear until 1746. Main title page in red and black. The "Myologie complette" is the second edition of his Essai d'anatomie, and the second edition of his Suite de l'essai d'anatomie, brought together in one volume. Cf. Choulant-Frank. History and bibliography of anatomic illustration. The plates are colour-printed mezzotints engraved by Jacques Gautier from the dissections of G.J. Duverney.
