Newspapers from the Times History Center

    Manuscripts

A selection of approximately 600 to 800 original Los Angeles Times newspapers, including special sections, special editions and others, 1881 to 2002. Also copies of The Mirror newspaper (1948 to 1962) and other local and national newspapers (19th century to the 1990s). Some are photocopies or reproductions, including a reprint only of the first "Los Angeles Daily Times" of December 4, 1881. (See Related Materials for an original edition held by the Huntington Library.) These newspapers were collected by the Times History Center, an in-house institutional archive for the Times and Times Mirror Corporation. There are approximately two to 20 newspaper editions for each year. Some are whole editions, some are parts. They were selected for history-making news; events related to Times business or publishers; the first or last of sections or regional editions; special sections; and other significant content. There are several examples of in-house pages created as souvenirs for retiring employees. These tribute "mock pages" were a tradition among newspaper editorial staff.
