Written in 1519 in southern Italy, perhaps Naples, for Andrea Matteo III Acquaviva d'Aragona (1458-1529), Duke of Atri, whose arms are in the lower margin of f. 18, as in Rietstap, vol. 1, pl. 8, except that the second and third quarter in the manuscript bear, impaled, or a lion rampant azure, and argent a lion rampant gules. Belonged to the Duke de Cassano Serra of Naples, whose collection was acquired ca. 1820 by George John Spencer, 2nd Earl Spencer (1758-1834). Lord Spencer disposed of unwanted items at various sales; this manuscript in his sale, Sotheby's, 5 February 1828, lot 196 to Roth. In the library of Albert Edmund Parker, 3rd Earl of Morley (1843-1905); his sale, Sotheby's, 27 June 1898, lot 934 to Quaritch. Robert Hoe collection: Cat. (1909) pp. 149-51; his sale, Anderson, New York, 1912, pt. IV, n. 2368 with plate of f. 17v to G. D. Smith. Acquired by Henry E. Huntington in 1918.
