The papers concern Savage's writing and research on African American history, especially in the California and trans-Mississippi West, his retirement from Lincoln University in 1960 and his subsequent teaching at Cal State LA. There is also material about his efforts to secure a publisher for his major study, Blacks in the West. The papers in this collection represent only the latter portion of Savage's career as an historian and educator. Unfortunately, according to Savage himself, his earlier papers were destroyed by a tenant who was leasing the Savages' home after his retirement from Lincoln University. Notable items include correspondence in 1969 and 1970 between Sherman Savage and various representatives of the University of Nebraska's educational television station in the course of developing a television series on African-Americans in the West; multiple drafts of Sherman Savage's major publication, Blacks in the West.

Winston, Moorland-Spingarn Research Center, Howard University, July 14, 1974, Box 7, folder 10). Some notable items include correspondence in 1969 and 1970 between Sherman Savage and various representatives of the University of Nebraska's educational television station in the course of developing a television series on African-Americans in the West (see Savage to Larry Long, Box 6, folder 53 and University of Nebraska, University Television to Sherman Savage, Box 7, folder 42); multiple drafts of Sherman Savage's major publication, Blacks in the West (Westport, CT: Greenwood Press, 1976), Boxes 1 through 3. Note: Many of the materials are in rather poor physical condition because of the deteriorating paper upon which the letters or manuscripts were produced or because of previous circumstances of storage.

George Sherman journal of a voyage

This manuscript follows the travels of George Sherman, from New York to the Pacific coast by way of Panama, during the years 1849-1853, and aboard the ships John L. Stephens and Oregon. This account was written after 1881.

Walter Savage Landor correspondence

The collection consists of 110 letters from Walter Savage Landor; 95 are to his sister, Elizabeth Landor, and 15 are to his niece, Sophy Landor. There are also 35 letters from Elizabeth Landor to Walter Savage Landor and three from Sophy Landor to Walter Savage Landor. The collection also contains correspondence to and from Sophy Landor and others (98 pieces) about the affairs of Walter Savage Landor from 1858 and after. There are also a few manuscripts, and press clippings of Landor's poems and about the libel case, Yescombe v. Landor in 1858.

Mary Almeda Perry Brown memoirs

Memoirs of Mary Almeda Perry Brown, written in a literary prose style and covering the years from the 1880s to the 1940s. The manuscript contains a vivid and detailed account of her childhood and young adult life, including her travels through the state of Utah, her thwarted attempt at a theatre career, teaching school and working at a boarding house to pay for her college education, and her college experiences. While a great many family anecdotes are included, much of the memoir focuses on Brown's professional career, including teaching at Brigham Young College (1901-1904), working on a teaching mission in Colonia Juarez, Mexico (1904-1906), teaching at the L.D.S. University in Salt Lake City (1906-1908), receiving her master's degree from Columbia University (1912-1915), studying at UC Berkeley (1932-1933), teaching at the Utah State Agricultural College (1926-1947), and serving as Director of Nutrition Research and Acting Dean of the School of Home Economics (1943-1945). She was also an agent with the Box Elder County Commissioners from 1923-1926. She also recounts the tragic history of her marriage to Charles Brown, including his increasingly erratic behavior and financial troubles, which led to their estrangement and his bankruptcy and eventual suicide in 1930. Typewritten manuscript with handwritten annotations. Included with the manuscript are a typed personal record for Mary Almeda Brown and offprints of articles by Brown on nutrition and children's health in Utah (1929-1944).
