Autobiography and diaries of Joab Collier [microform] : 1874-1905

Description: Microfilm of Joab Collier's autobiography, written in about 1905, and two diaries covering 1874-1875. In the autobiography Collier recounts his father's death in a coal mine in 1856, living with his mother on her earnings from a cotton factory, moving to Yorkshire to work in a wool factory after the cotton factory was closed during the American Civil War, attending parish school in Newton (he left at age 13 to work in the factory full time, and describes his work schedule there), starting for the United States in 1869 and arriving in Utah in 1870, working on the railroad in Draper in 1871, returning to school and working herding sheep in 1873, living with Dr. R.M. Boyers and his family, meeting Theodocia at a dance, briefly attending Brigham Young Academy, various livelihoods including agricultural work and sheep herding, and of beginning to raise bees in the 1880s. He also describes specific memories such as the wedding of Prince Albert of Wales in 1863 and trying to pay back a $36 loan his mother took out on arriving in Utah. The 1874 journal was kept while Collier was living with Dr. Boyers, and the entries focus on his work in a store, going to dances, buying livestock and picking up coal, and attending religious meetings. The 1875 journal focuses on Collier's social activities, including his courtship of Theodocia. Some portions of the diary were written in the Deseret alphabet.

Autobiography [microform] : 1837-1874

Microfilm of a typescript of Goudy Hogan's autobiography, typed by Muriel Hogan Hunter in 1935. This copy was owned by Margaret Hogan Traveller. Included are descriptions of Hogan's life from the time of his arrival in the United States from Norway until his travels to Dixie, Utah, in 1874. Hogan writes of his family's life in Illinois and Iowa and their journey westward to Utah, his experiences driving a government oxen team from Council Bluffs to Salt Lake City, his desire to joint the Mormon Battalion, and his involvement in several grist mills, including those at High Creek and Mink Creek. Hogan frequently details aspects of his daily life such as the raising of crops, the building of log cabins, and the types of clothing required for overland travel. He also describes his sorrow at the news of Joseph Smith's death, the debts acquired from his grist mills, his years of crops lost to grasshoppers, and the deaths of many of his children from illnesses. The microfilm also contains a portion of Hogan's original handwritten manuscript and a typescript portion of his biography/autobiography, written with his daughter Josephine Hogan Adair.

Diary and autobiography of George Lake [microform] :

Microfilm of the diary and autobiography of George Lake, beginning with diary entries of his mission trip to England from October 1870 to August 1871. Lake appears to have been living at Workington in Cumberland, although he frequently traveled to Newcastle and surrounding areas. The mission entries focus on Lake's attendance of Church conferences and his interactions with local Mormons, including notes on births, marriages, and deaths. The remainder of the volume is a mixture of autobiography and diary entries, and recalls Lake's move to Oxford in Round Valley, Utah, following his return from England in 1871; his flight to avoid polygamy charges in 1874; his being placed in charge of the northern division of Arizona missionaries in 1876, including a list of names of fellow missionaries; and his involvement in creating the United Order at Yavapai, Arizona, in 1877. The volume includes the text of the "last address by Gen. Joseph Smith the Prophet to the Nauvoo Legion in June 1844," followed by a brief summary of Lake's life in 1879. The final pages, in another hand, include a family record with genealogy up through about 1938 and the texts of patriarchal blessings on the Lake family in 1913.

Diary and autobiography [microform] : 1854-1855 1909

Microfilm of two volumes kept by William Fotheringham. The first - kept at Milford, Beaver County, Utah, in 1909 - includes the text of patriarchal blessings given by Fotheringham from 1907-1909, notes on the St. George Temple, and part of Fotheringham's autobiography, including accounts of his leaving Scotland, traveling through Utah, and settling Beaver County. The second volume describes Fotheringham's mission work in India from 1854-1855. It includes references to his time at Manickpatna, Cuttack, Kunderpara, Calcutta, and the Bay of Bengal. The diary concludes with Fotheringham's return voyage to San Francisco by way of Singapore and the China Sea, as well as his travels through San Jose, Union City, Soledad, and Santa Clara.
