The collection consists of 6202 black-and-white and color photographs, pen and ink drawings, and postcards, 1412 black-and-white and color negatives, 2606 black-and-white and color slides, and ephemeral materials, 1898-1982 (bulk 1920s-1930s) collected by the Automobile Club of Southern California. They form a general photographic reference collection as well as a broad visual survey of topics of interest to California motorists. Included are images of sites in North and Central America (with an emphasis on California), Europe, the Pacific Islands, and portraits, as well as images related to other subjects of interest to the Club's membership. Many of the images were published as illustrations for articles in the Club's first member magazine, Touring Topics. A large portion of the photographs were taken by authors of articles that appeared in Touring Topics; others were commissioned by the Club; and others appear to have been sent to the Club. Photographers (and authors) include, but are not limited to, Ansel Adams, Fred Archer, Viroque Baker, George Hugh Banning, Adelbert Bartlett, Virginia S. Bartlett, Andrew R. Manuscripts
The Manuscripts series contains various poems, stories, and historical accounts written by Samuel L. Kreider. Many of these accounts relate to individuals like Charles Victor Hall and Mary Hall (original homesteaders of Los Angeles' West Adams area), structures like the Los Angeles High School, and other California histories. It also includes notes, reports, and other documents from the Friday Morning Club and its prominent members. Beyond the private papers, this series holds many documents relating to U.S. trade with Japan and the federal General Accounting Office branch in Los Angeles. There is also a Japanese poem. The series is arranged in alphabetical order and then chronologically. The Correspondence series is primarily related to Samuel L. Kreider. Most of the letters are work-related with a large percentage of them pertaining to U.S. trade with Japanese businesses. Moreover, there is also private correspondence. Mr. Kreider corresponded with many locally and nationally prominent people. The list includes, but is not limited to Fletcher Bowron, Herbert Hoover, and Lansing Hoskins Beach. He also has correspondence from C.C. Julian & Royalties Co. The series also contains letters Mr. Kreider wrote to various newspapers and magazines about publishing his historical accounts and stories. Lastly, there is correspondence pertaining to Mr. and Mrs. Kreider's philanthropic work within the Los Angeles High School Alumni Association and the Friday Morning Club. One letter is specifically from Caroline M. Severance. The series is arranged in alphabetical order by author and then by addressee.

The Banning Family Collection of Photographs, Part I, consists of 996 black and white photographs, 82 glass plate negatives (5 x 7 inches and 5 x 8 inches), and 1 scrapbook, 1855-1979 (bulk 1880s-1910s), collected by the Banning family and depicting various family members and friends and family properties (residential and commercial), with an emphasis on Wilmington and Santa Catalina Island, California. Of special significance are the Catalina photographs documenting the development of the island from a natural enclave with a few inhabitants to a thriving tourist resort. This collection contains photographs, negatives, and some ephemera chiefly collected by California conservationist and editor William H. Thrall (1873-1963) for use in Trails magazine. Thrall served as managing editor of the publication from 1934 to 1939, which was produced to encourage the use of mountain trails and outdoor recreation in Los Angeles County. The collection includes approximately 1200 prints (Boxes 1-4); 68 glass negatives (Boxes 7-8); approximately 2300 film negatives; 150 slides; and miscellaneous documents and ephemera, and a folding pocket camera. The photographs primarily date from the 1930s, but also include copy prints (and some originals) of late 19th and early 20th photographs. The images depict mountain and forested landscapes and outdoor recreational activities including hiking, skiing, and camping, chiefly in the San Gabriel Mountains and surrounding mountains of Southern California. Many of the photographs include individuals involved in recreational activities as well images of historical mountain pioneers. The photographs chiefly consist of 4.5 x 2.75 inch snapshots and 8 x 10 and 6 x 10 inch prints, by photographers including Dan P. Alexander, Carl H. Bauer, Harlow Dormer, C. C. Vernon, and Thrall. There is also a group of glass plate negatives and film negatives, including a group of unprinted film negatives that appear to be personal photographs with views of nature, groups of people, family scenes, buildings, boating, and trips, in the 1930s-1950s (Box 15). The film negatives have handwritten numbers presumably assigned by Thrall. Many of the prints appear in Trails magazine, which was published quarterly by the Mountain League of Southern California from Winter 1934 to Spring 1939 (Volume 6, No. 1). In Autumn 1941, the Southern California Outdoor Federation began publishing a new edition of Trails Magazine (without Thrall as editor), but only two issues were published (Volume 2, Nos. 1-2).
