Description
Image of a stone monument in the form of a shattered tree trunk. In the background are buildings. At the top of the monument is a cannon ball lodged in the heart of the tree, bark peeled away. Below this is a bird's nest, with bird guarding a nestling; metal vines entwine the tree. In the middle of the monument is attached a bronze shield on which is written: Right of the First Corps / Here fought the 90th / Penna. Infantry / on the afternoon of July 1, 1863 / killed and mortally wounded 11 / wounded 44, captured or missing / 39, total 94, of 208 engaged. / Organized at Phila. Oct. 1, 1861 / Mustered out, Nov. 26, 1864. Below this shield is a knapsack, in bronze, hung from the tree, a rifle, bayonet and ammunition box; written on the knapsack: 90th P.V. / 2nd Brig. 2nd Div. / First Corps.

At the top of the monument is a drum, below that the shamrock emblem of the Union Army's 2nd Corps is prominently carved into the stone. At the base of the monument there is tablet which reads: The regiment engaged / the enemy on this / position late in the / afternoon of July 2d., / succeeding 5th Corps / troops and holding the / right of the 1st Division / 2d.     Image of the monument to the 2nd Rhode Island Volunteers. Monument is topped by a bronze sculpture of a war drum against which are leaning an ammunition bag, a canteen, a wreath and a bayonet. On top of the drum is am infantryman's cap with the cross badge of the Union's Sixth Army Corps. On the front of the monument it reads: 2nd R.I. / Volunteers / Second Brigade/ Third Division / Sixth Corps. In the center of the monument is a carved bas-relief of the shield of the State of Rhode Island.
