Seven 16-page drawing books by William N. Bartholomew, published in 1881-1882, by three different publishers: Potter, Ainsworth & Co. of Boston, New York and Chicago (Nos. 6 [first copy], 11, and 12); American Book Company of New York, Cincinnati and Chicago (Nos. 6 [second copy], 10, and 13); and A.S. Barnes & Co. of New York and Chicago (No. 12). The books contain 14-30 numbered exercises progressing from simple two-dimensional copying and tracing (book no. 6) to significantly more complex, 3-dimensional copying and replication of the provided images (book no. 13). Only the first copy of book no. 6 (env. 5) has been completed by a previous owner.

Ralph M. Pearson's Design Workshop

A collection of correspondence courses and bulletins entitled Ralph M. Pearson's Design Workshop, authored and published by Ralph M. Pearson, Nyack, New York, 1937-1946. This collection is roughly divided into four sections. The first section is a run of a magazine column/articles by Ralph M. Pearson; the second section is a collection of issues of a correspondence course entitled Ralph M. Pearson's Design Workshop, Courses by Mail: Course 4 - Critical Appreciation; the third is a gathering of Design Workshop Bulletins and the fourth is a miscellaneous collection of notices and flyers relating to the correspondence courses. Most of the miscellaneous mailings are addressed to Mabel Spofford. All of these items are from her personal collection. First section: A collection of 35 installments of a monthly column/article entitled "The Artist's Point of View" by Ralph M. Pearson, as published in Forum Magazine. Most of the installments are date stamped; the dates range from March 1937 to May 1940 (the first few articles are not date stamped). Second Section: An incomplete set of a correspondence course entitled Ralph M. Pearson's Design Workshop, Courses by Mail, Course 4 - Critical Appreciation, by Ralph M. Pearson, Nos. 1-4, 6-9, 11-13, and 15 (12 numbers in total). Number 15 is dated 1942; the others are not dated. Third section: An incomplete set of issues of Design Workshop Bulletin, by Ralph M. Pearson. The collection includes No. 5 February 1937; No. 6 March 1937; No. 9 [1938]; No. 9 October 1938; No. 5 March 1939, and No. 6 March 1939. Fourth section: A collection of 17 miscellaneous notices, bulletins, publisher's advertisements and mailings relating to Ralph M. Pearson's Design Workshop Courses by Mail. These mailings are dated between March 1939 and 1941.

American Text Books of Art Education: Free-Hand Drawing, Numbers One-Six

Eight drawing books by Walter Smith, published by James R. Osgood & Company, Boston (Nos. 1, 2, and 6) and also by L. Prang & Company, Boston (Nos. 3-5). In this particular set there are duplicates of Nos. 2 and 6. These books range in length from 14 to 20 pages and contain numbered exercises consisting of explanatory text, an image, and space for copying. The exercises progress in complexity within each book and within the series. Some of the books have been completed by students.

American Text-Books of Art Education, Revised Edition, No. 10

Six drawing books entitled American Text-Books of Art Education, Revised Edition, Nos. 5, 7, 7, 9, 10, 14, published by L. Prang & Co., Boston, copyright 1879. These drawing books are each 20 pages in length and include numbered lessons, each with instructional text, lithograph illustrations, and space for copying. The front cover is decoratively bordered, the title centered. The inside of the front covers contain a "Special Notice to Teachers", which provides instructional information for using this series. On each of the back covers is a publisher's advertisement for "A System of Industrial and Artistic Drawing for Public Schools (Revised Edition)." The insides of the back covers of Books 7, 9, 10 and 14 are blank. The insides of the back covers of the remaining books contain publisher's advertisements. The books range in complexity from relatively simple to more complex; and the same range exists within each of the books. The exercises range from simple shapes and angles (in Book No. 5) to more complex images, such as scenes and views which include projection and perspective (in Book 14). Book No. 5 appears to focus on the creation of shapes and patterns based on geometric forms; Book 7 (both copies) focuses on tracing and transferring; Book 8 emphasizes freehand drawing from models (objects and plant life); Book 9 focuses on rectangular forms and historic styles in design; Book 10 emphasizes simple shapes and angles, ornamental designs and borders; and Book 14 focuses on projection and perspective. Book 14 is lacking the first 2 leaves, therefore the first 4 exercises are missing. Some of the images have been copied by previous owners, and some of the books contain sheets with original artwork laid in. "David Anderson" is written in ms. on the front cover of Book No. 7 (one of the 2 copies). Book No. 5 is smaller than the other books in the series. The dimensions provided are for Books Nos. 7-14.
