Description
One book, copyright 1942, entitled Art Education Alert: Aids America to Meet Wartime Needs, published by the Pratt Institute, New York. This booklet is 48 pages in length, and contains black and white illustrations. The front cover is decorated in bold blue and red graphics, with the phrase "Four Freedoms: religion, want, speech, fear" along the left-hand side. The insides of the front and back covers are illustrated with a black and white visual representation of the wartime program for art. Franklin Delano Roosevelt is quoted on the title page. He cites the school as a significant factor in preserving American government. The introduction makes clear the way art can be instrumental for this purpose: "Art today is selling the prosecution of the war to our people: it is selling the need for conservation, for enlisting in the services, for stamping out rumor, for cooperating with civilian agencies, for financially supporting the government and the Red Cross." The book is organized according to age level-appropriate activities. "Introduction, A Plan for Art Education; The Elementary School Level; The Junior High Level; The Senior High Level; The Adult Education Level; The Supplement; Art in the War Today; Materials, Sources." "Mabel Spofford" is written in ms. at the top of the front cover.

    Nine books entitled New Art Education, published by Prang Company Publishers, "A Division of The American Crayon Company, Sandusky, Ohio", copyright 1944, 1945 and 1947. The books are numbered, 1-9; laid into each is a second book, an accompanying teacher guide, entitled Teachers Reference and Course of Study, published in 1947. (One book is intended for the teacher and one for the student.) Accompanying these nine sets are three teacher reference guides titled Teachers Reference and Course of Study. The first is labeled "A", "to accompany New Art Education Books I, II, III"; the second is labeled B, and the third C, to accompany Books 4, 5, 6 and 7, 8, 9 respectively. These books contain ideas, instructions and projects for a wide variety of arts and crafts projects for schoolchildren. All nine sets, and the Teachers Reference and Course of Study vols. A-C, are illustrated typically in black and white. Each of the nine New Art Education books and each of the Teachers Reference books have "Mabel Spofford" written in ms., in ink, on the front cover, and some on the title page. Laid into Book I of New Art Education are two TLSs on Stover School Art Service (of Birmingham, Michigan) letterhead, which are promotional and advertising solicitations for art projects and supplies. One letter is dated Jan. 18, 1933, the other Sept. 24, 1935; each is addressed to Miss Mabel Spofford , Supv. of Drawing, Gloucester, Mass. Within each letter are a few sample art projects for examination.

Service Center Booklet 2" is printed at the bottom of the front cover. This book is 112 pages in length, contains black and white illustrations, and bibliographical references. "Copyright 1943 by Progressive Education Association" and "Printed in the United States of America by Reliable Press, Inc., New York, N.Y." are printed on the verso of the half-title. The book is divided into 13 primary topics: "Materials and Design; Art and Aviation Education; Map Making; Pictorial Charts; Informative Exhibits; Puppetry; Posters, Handbills, and Booklets; Dyeing, Painting, and Printing with Natural Materials; Weaving and Rug Making; Pottery and Modeling; Carving Wood, Plaster and Stone; Using Light and Materials for Photograms; Exploring Plastics."     Three drawing books entitled American Text-Books of Art Education, Clark Edition, No. 5, No. 8, and No. 9, published by L. Prang & Co., Boston, 1882-1886. These books are each 20 pages in length, and contain numbered exercises of lithograph illustrations, which emphasize line and form (Book No. 5); construction and representation (Book No. 8); and construction, representation and Roman decoration (Book No. 9). The front covers are decoratively bordered. The inside of the front cover of each features a "Special Notice to Teachers", which explains the use of this book. Book No. 8 also contains an advertisement for Prang's Models for Drawing on the inside of the front cover. A publisher's advertisement for "Prang's American Text-Books of Art Education: a course of instruction in drawing for public schools" begins on the inside of the back cover and continues onto the back cover of Book No. 5. This same advertisement is just on the back covers of Books 8 and 9. The exercises within consist of illustrations, patterns and designs of a relatively simple nature, often floral and leafy designs. Each of the exercises is textually and visually explained, with space for continuation or copying. Most of the exercises in each of the 3 books have been copied by a previous owner. "Mary Jones" and "1.00" (price) are written in ms. at the top of the front cover of Book No. 5. "Lucius Tompkins" is written in ms., along the spine side, on the front cover of Book No. 8. Book No. 5 is smaller than the other two. The dimensions provided are for Books 8 and 9.

Several of the sections were written by named individuals, rather than the Council as a whole. There are ms. notes and annotations throughout. "Mabel Spofford, her book" is written in ms., in ink, on the bottom of the front cover.

The front cover, a red and yellow image of two marionettes, was designed and signed by Venizelos Kanellis. This book is 24 pages in length, and is illustrated with black and white photographs and sketches. Included in the book are instructions for making marionettes, stage setting, stage construction and play selection and performance. On the inside of the front cover is "Copyright, 1934, by Art Education Press, Inc." and "Printed in the United States of America by the Rumford Press, Concord, New Hampshire." A blue ink stamp reading "For sale by The Palmer Company, 120 Boylston St., Boston, Mass." is printed at the bottom of the title page.
