One painting book entitled Palette Painting Book, published by McLoughlin Bros., New York, copyright 1892. The cover of the painting book shows a young man holding a painted image while a young girl takes his arm. The back cover depicts a watercolor set, water, brushes, paint tube, and compass. The inside front cover lists "a few practical instructions for young painters" including suggestions on what colors to include in the student's watercolor set and how to mix them. The book is designed so that the student studies a colored image and then apply color to an outline image. There are a total of 22 images: eleven in color and eleven in outline. The images depict various scenes of people, children, animals, and nursery rhyme characters with tag lines at the bottom. None of the images have been filled in. A "10.00" is penciled in on the upper-right corner of the title page.

Art Studies for Little People: Landscapes

One painting book entitled Art Studies for Little People: Landscapes, published by McLoughlin Bros., New York, copyright 1902. The title page reads: Object Painting Book. This book is comprised of 8 leaves of chromolithograph plates: half in full color and half in dull green and black tones, intended for coloring by the student. The front cover is a chromolithograph of a house on a hillside, and cherry trees in bloom. "Copyright 1901 by McLoughlin Bros., New York" is printed in the lower left-hand corner. The back cover is blank, except for the Mother Goose logo in the lower right-hand corner, and "No. 83 1/2" printed below it. The inside of the front cover is illustrated with a palette containing 5 colors. "Directions for Using the Colors Printed on Other Half of Cover" are printed on the inside of the back cover. The title page, which bears a different title from that on the front cover ("Object Painting Book"), is decorated with line drawings. "Copyright 1902" is printed at the bottom of the title page. The images in the book are accompanied by rhymes and poems. None of the images have been colored in.

The ‘Little Artist’s' Masterpiece Painting Set: With Quality Paints and Masterpiece Pictures

One boxed painting set entitled The ‘Little Artist’s' Masterpiece Painting Set: with Quality Paints and Masterpiece Pictures, manufactured by Whitman Publishing Co., ca. 1932. This set is comprised of 8 round cakes of watercolor paint within wooden tubs, two oblong metal dishes, 2 sheets containing 16 color images entitled Famous Paintings to Paint and Color, 4 double-sided sheets, each containing 4 images for painting, and a book of 11 color images entitled Color Reproductions of Ten Famous Paintings: Including Historical Sketches of the Artists and the Pictures, Suitable for Framing. "1932" is written in ms., in pencil, on the verso of the last leaf of this book of reproductions. The images as models are the same as those in the book of reproductions. Some of the images included are: "The Blue Boy" by Gainsborough; "The Helping Hand" by Renouf; "The Sistine Madonna" by Raphael, and "Portrait of George Gisz" by Holbein. One of the images has been partially painted.

Tom Sawyer Painting Set

One boxed painting set entitled Tom Sawyer Painting Set, manufactured by Standard Solophone Manufacturing Company, N.Y., in conjunction with Paramount Pictures, copyright 1931. This set is comprised of 30 cakes of watercolor paint, two metal dishes, four small tubes of watercolor paints, 8 colored wax crayons, 8 outline images for painting, 2 color images (stills) from the movie, and a 4-page "'Tom Sawyer' Nuart Poster Color Guide." The images in this set are based on the Paramount Pictures movie Tom Sawyer starring Jackie Coogan as Tom. Four of the eight paint-by-number outline images have been completed. On the lid of the box is a scene of 'Tom' painting a portrait of 'Junior Durkin', who is seated in front of him. An artist's palette and a box of paints are behind 'Tom'. Below the image of the two boys is printed "Characters from the Paramount Photo-Play." "Copyright 1931" and "Made by Standard Solophone Mfg. Co., N.Y. Made in USA" and "Picture contents copyright 1931 by Standard Solophone Mfg. Co., Inc." are printed in the lower left and right-hand corners, respectively, of the lid. The watercolor paint inside the box has been lightly used; the crayons have not been used.

First Steps in Art

One drawing/coloring book entitled First Steps in Art, published by McLoughlin Bros., Springfield, Massachusetts, ca. 1910. This large book is 24 unnumbered pages in length, and contains drawing "problems" with instructions as well as images and scenes for coloring. The intent of the book is stated at the bottom of the title page: "In this book there are twelve simple problems in drawing for a child from five to twelve years of age; also there are thirteen interesting color pages to be painted or crayoned in five primary colors, yellow, red, blue, green and purple." The brightly colored front and back covers together form one scene of a boy and girl running through a flower garden. Printed at the bottom of the back cover is: "McLoughlin Brothers Inc. Springfield, Massachusetts, Made in U.S.A."

Hood's Sarsaparilla Painting Book

One painting book entitled Hood's Sarsaparilla Painting Book, published by C.I. Hood & Co., of Lowell, Massachusetts, copyright 1894. The front cover illustration features a girl wearing a smock who is painting the title of the book; the back cover features a colored image which is reproduced inside the book. Cut to resemble a rectangular palette, the book has 36 pages of images, most of which are in outline form for painting. Colored images serve as a guide for student in the appropriate use of color. The book advertises Hood's Sarsaparilla, a patent medicine, and the company itself. There are images of children playing, of Hood's Factory and Hood's Farm, and even of Merry Maiden, the prize cow from Hood's Farm. The majority of the outline images have been filled in using watercolors. Instructions for the use of watercolor are included.
