The book has a hole (as in a palette) cut through the upper-left hand corner. The front cover shows a young lad painting a landscape at an easel. The back cover depicts two song birds on a thorny branch with berries, overlooking a farm. The book contains 69 pages of images, both in outline and complementary color image formats. The majority of the images have been filled in, using watercolor wax crayon (or colored pencil), and chalk. Many of the outlines are very light and some were traced over in pencil prior to being filled in. One image of two girls has been labeled "Elfrida" and "Beatrice" and the title page has been copied, in wax crayon or color pencil, on the inside front cover. In the upper-right corner of the title page has been written, in pencil, "6 Full Color Plates #40 amu/22--."
