One boxed set of paper stencils comprised of 6 large paper stencils, accompanied by 4 illustrations made using the stencils and four additional, smaller paper stencils. The scenes of the stencils are named on the box lid: "Dutch Wind Mill, German Village, French Convent, New Navy, Old Navy, Summer Home." The manufacturer's name is not present, but the set is very similar to sets 3 and 4 (Box 81) made by McLoughlin Bros., New York.

Magic Dots for Little Tots

One paper dot kit entitled Magic Dots for Little Tots, manufactured by the Milton Bradley Company, Springfield, Massachusetts, ca. 1910. The set is comprised of five cardboard cards, a packet of colored paper dots, and a set of printed instructions. The set is housed within a paperboard box; a chromolithograph image of a girl holding up a finished dot picture is on the top lid. On each of the 5 cards is printed an image with holes in the card; the images are to be "colored" by placing the colored dots within the holes which complete the image. The colored paper dots are removable, and the cards are reusable. The printed instructions accompanying this kit also serve as an order form for other sets; this set is No. 4482, Set 2. "Patented 1907, Patented in Canada 1910" is printed on the instruction sheet. Laid into the box is an empty sample box of cold relief and laxative pills.

Boxed painting set, circa 1915

One boxed painting set, ca. 1915. This set is contained within a light wooden box and is comprised of a wooden tray which holds (via red elastic bands) 10 small cakes of watercolor paint, two porcelain mixing dishes, two paintbrushes, a 5-inch wooden ruler, and two wooden sticks. Tucked into the top lid and below a cardstock divider in the bottom half are 8 sheets containing original artwork. An additional sheet with sample images for copying is included and tucked into the top lid. The top lid is attached to the box with a red cloth ribbon and decorated with a chromolithograph image, in the shape of an artist's palette, of a winter scene. A small metal lock is affixed to both halves of the box. No manufacturer is listed; no date is given. Title supplied by cataloger.

Professor Nast's Sketching Rack for Young Artists

One wooden lap desk labeled Professor Nast's Sketching Rack for Young Artists, manufactured by C. C. Shepherd, New York, ca. 1885. The sub-title reads "The most important part of the Education of Children, in Drafting or Pencil Sketching. This Rack furnishes a complete outfit for that purpose." The desk is comprised of a wooden box with a hinged "double" lid. The uppermost lid is the smaller of the two, and bears the item label on the top surface, and provides space for holding a sample image (for copying) underneath. The second lid, also slanted, serves as the lid that covers the lower portion of the box. The top of this lid is covered with blue blotting paper. The box includes 12 sheets of woodblock images and 3 paper-covered wooden slats containing images for copying. The wooden slats illustrate penmanship forms and basic geometric shapes. Also included are 2 sheets of paper containing illustrations copied, in pencil, from two of the sample woodblock images, and a sheet of used blotting paper. "Ernest" is written in ms., in red chalk, on the blue blotting paper. "For {Harry N. Rice & Minnie L. Rice} Flo" is written in ms., in pencil, on the underside of the box bottom.

Water Color School Box

One boxed set of watercolor paints entitled Water Color School Box, manufactured by Wadsworth, Howland & Co., Boston, Massachusetts, ca. 1895. The set is comprised of 10 small cakes of watercolor paint set within two rows of metal supports, one quill brush, one wooden stick, and a small stick of charcoal. The set is housed within a metal box; the lid is divided into four sections: the top two sections contain the manufacturer's name and address, the bottom two contain the title. The box is colored green and has gold lettering. A printed slip of paper is laid into the bottom of the box underneath the two rows of paints, so only a portion of it is legible: "When you need more of any of the colors in this box we will furnish them at short notice. Wadsworth, Howland & Co., Inc."

Crayola-Picture-Tracer

One boxed tracing set entitled Crayola-Picture-Tracer, manufactured by E.I.H. Co., ca. 1911. This tracing set is comprised of one metal drawing and tracing "tablet", 11 chromolithograph cards for tracing, and a roll of tracing paper mounted into the metal tablet. These items are housed within a cardboard box with a hinged lid. Illustrated instructions are printed on the underside of the top lid. A listing of the contents is also given: "This outfit consists of an enameled steel hygienic tracing and drawing tablet of simple construction. (See explanatory cut.) Seventeen Crayola Crayons in different colors, and one black Crayon for outlining; Twelve colored pictures (Fairy-Tale Series); a roll of tracing paper; Crayon sharpener." The sharpener, crayons and one colored card are missing. On each of the cards is printed "Copyright, 1913, by Binney & Smith Co., N.Y." "Crayola-Picture Tracer Pat'd Oct. 24, 1911" is embossed on the metal tracing tablet. Also included are 9 additional images, 7 of which are a newspaper cartoon series. The lid of the box is illustrated with a chromolithograph copy of one of the tracing cards. The label reads: "Do not call a toy for children perfect until you look inside and see the Crayola-Picture Tracer, everything a toy should be--and nothing it should not be." Much of the roll of tracing paper is intact; one completed traced and colored image is within a protective envelope, and another image is "in process" on the device itself.
