    One drawing book entitled Educational and Industrial Drawing: Primary Freehand Series, No. 1, by Langdon S. Thompson, published by D.C. Heath & Co., Boston, Chicago and New York, 1874. This book is comprised of 24 lessons (3 to a page) and 2 additional lessons, without textual instruction. The front cover is decoratively illustrated, with a vase bearing the author's name. The back cover is a publisher's advertisement for the Educational and Industrial System of Drawing, by Langdon S. Thompson, offered for sale by D.C. Heath & Co. On the inside of the front cover are explanations and directions for use of the series and this book, which are continued on the inside of the back cover. Wrapped around the pages of text (so that they appear to be the first and last pages) are three horizontal half sheets in three primary colors: yellow, red, and blue. Each of the lessons allows space for copying and practicing; only the first three lessons have been filled in.

    One drawing instruction book entitled Learn to Draw with Jon Gnagy: America's television art instructor, published by A. Brown in New York, 1950. [The publication information and date are not on the item; they have been supplied by OCLC] The first 2 pages are missing. This book is 64 pages in length, and is comprised of progressive drawing lessons. It begins with warm-up exercises which include lines, shapes, and forms, as well as brief lessons in shading, shadowing and texture. Also included are lessons in composition, perspective and realistic representation. The middle section of the book is comprised of 7 6-page exercises, and the remainder is devoted to learning to draw the human figure and faces. The illustrations throughout are in black and white. The longer lessons include a still life of vegetables and fruit; a woman and child on a dock at a riverbank and a steam engine approaching a train station, among others. Below the title on the front cover is a photographic image of Jon Gnagy drawing a picture. The back cover duplicates the front cover. The insides of the front and back covers are blank. "50" (price) is written in ms., in pencil, on the upper right-hand corner of p. 3.

    One drawing book entitled Spencerian Drawing-Book, No. 2, by Henry Hitchings, published by Ivison, Blakeman, Taylor & Co., New York and Chicago, copyright 1871. This book contains 24 lessons, two per a single half sheet, and accompanied by a full-size plain sheet for copying, so that the model lithograph illustration is next to the plain sheet. In this particular booklet, each lesson leaf is bound in backwards, so that Lesson II appears first, and Lesson I is on the verso, and the booklet continues in that manner. General textual instructions and instructions for each of the lessons begin on the inside of the front cover, continue on to the inside of the back cover, and end on the back cover. The lessons progress from simple to more complex images; Lesson I is of simple boxes; later lessons include various pieces of furniture, columns and buckets. Each of the lessons has been completed in pencil, and some are signed in ms. "A.M. Thayer 1874". The front cover is illustrated with a view of a young woman, seated at a writing desk, pencil in hand. Below the title is "Prepared by H. Hitchings, Teacher of Drawing in the English High School of Boston, Massachusetts. Late of the United States Naval School at Annapolis, Maryland." Also on the front cover, in the upper right-hand corner, is "Annie M. Thayer. Sep., Oct. & Nov. 1874.", written in ms.

    One painting book entitled Painting Plays for Rainy Days, And Easy Drawing Lessons, by J. H. Willard, published by Thompson & Thomas, Chicago, 1902. [Note: the imprint information for this record is taken from the title on the title page, which differs slightly from the cover.] The book is approximately 200 unnumbered pages in length. The front cover is a chromolithograph of three kittens playing with a paint box and brushes. The back cover is not illustrated. The illustrations inside the book are a combination of chromolithographs and outline images for painting. Some of the pictures are accompanied by rhymes or instructional text. The images seem to progress throughout the book from simple (drawing straight lines) to increasingly more complex (patterns and designs). These include scenes of children at play, patterns, designs, fruits and vegetables, animals and buildings. Also included are lessons in perspective and proportion. Many of the images have been colored with watercolor .

    One set of drawing cards entitled Bartholomew's Primary School Drawing Cards, No. 1, by W. N. Bartholomew, published by Woolworth, Ainsworth & Co., New York and Chicago, 1874. This set is comprised of 10 double-sided lithograph cards, principally containing line drawing lessons on each side, totaling 20 lessons. The exercises in this series are listed on the envelope wrapper, below the title: "SET No. 1 - Simple exercises in placing points, drawing lines, plane figures, familiar objects and ornamental forms; also lessons in Printing and Writing." Sets 2 and 3 are also described. Each lesson is printed on a black background, with the image or letter to be copied in white. These drawing cards were designed to be used in conjunction with a drawing slate; the card would be placed in the card holder at one end of the slate, and the image copied onto the slate. The penmanship lessons on Card 10 are labeled "Payson, Dunton & Scribner's Penmanship." On the back side of the envelope is a publisher's advertisement for "Bartholomew's National System of Industrial Drawing" books. The dimensions provided are for the envelope.

    Twelve drawing books entitled Applied Arts Drawing Books, edited by Wilhelmina Seegmiller, published by Atkinson Mentzer & Grover, New York, Chicago, Boston, Atlanta, and Dallas, copyright 1908. Two "issues" per year; the 12 volumes are labeled (?) as follows: Fourth Year, Spring; Fourth Year, Autumn and Winter; Fifth Year, Autumn and Winter; Fifth Year, Autumn and Winter; Sixth Year, Autumn and Winter; Sixth Year, Autumn and Winter; Seventh Year, Autumn and Winter; Seventh Year, Autumn and Winter; Eighth Year, Autumn and Winter; Eighth Year, Autumn and Winter; Eighth Year, Autumn and Winter. (some duplicates) These instruction books contain black and white illustrations, color plates, and instructional text. At the bottom of each cover: "Copyright 1908 by Wilhelmina Seegmiller, Entered at Stationers Hall, London". Each volume is vertically oriented, with the spine at the top of the volume, so the user opens the cover and turns each page up, instead of to the left, as usual. Covers are printed in green, and have a decorative border with the company's logo in the center. Each volume averages 32 pages.
